Building blocks must be made of non-toxic, high-quality ABS plastic to ensure durability and safety. For international trade, products must comply with EN71 (Europe), ASTM F963 (USA), and CCC (China) certifications. It is crucial to verify that the materials are BPA-free and use lead-free pigments to prevent health risks for children.

The 'clutch power' is the most critical technical metric. High-quality blocks should have a tolerance within 0.01mm to ensure they are fully compatible with major brands. You should request samples to test the tightness of fit—blocks should be easy to assemble but not fall apart when lifted. Check for smooth edges and no burrs to ensure a premium user experience.

All products must clearly display choking hazard warnings for small parts, especially for sets intended for children under 3 years old. The packaging should include clear age-appropriate icons and multi-language instruction manuals. For B2B buyers, ensuring the outer carton strength (ECT rating) is sufficient for international shipping is vital to prevent retail box damage.

Look for suppliers on Made-in-China.com that possess ISO 9001 certification and have at least 10+ injection molding machines. If you require custom sets, confirm they offer MOC (My Own Creation) support, including custom mold development and high-resolution UV printing for minifigures rather than low-quality stickers.

This is the highest risk in the building block industry. Avoid products that exactly replicate patented Lego designs or copyrighted themes (like Star Wars or Marvel) without a license. Focus on original designs or generic building sets. Ensure your supplier provides an IP Indemnification clause in the contract to protect you from legal seizures at customs.

Negotiate based on weight and material costs rather than just unit price. For orders exceeding 1,000 units, you should aim for a 15-20% discount. Ask for 'spare parts' (usually 1-2% extra blocks) to be included for free to handle potential missing piece claims from end consumers, which reduces your after-sales cost.

Building blocks are 'light cargo' but bulky. Use FOB (Free On Board) terms to maintain control over shipping costs. Request palletization with plastic wrap to prevent moisture damage during sea freight. For retail-ready goods, ensure the supplier uses five-layer corrugated outer boxes to protect the aesthetic value of the colorful retail packaging.

Always use Secured Trading Services provided by Made-in-China.com to ensure payment is only released upon proof of shipment. Conduct a Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) through a third party to verify the piece count and plastic quality before the final balance is paid.
