Sea shipping service manufacturers

B2B buyers typically choose between FCL (Full Container Load) and LCL (Less than Container Load). FCL is ideal for large volumes, offering better security and faster transit as the container is dedicated to one shipper. LCL is cost-effective for smaller shipments, where cargo from multiple shippers shares a container, though it requires additional time for consolidation and deconsolidation.

A professional shipping service provider should be a member of WCA (World Cargo Alliance) or FIATA. They must hold a NVOCC (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier) license to issue their own Bills of Lading. For shipments to the US, ensure they are FMC-registered and compliant with ISF (Importer Security Filing) requirements.

Standard 20GP and 40HQ containers suit general cargo. However, for perishable goods, Reefer (Refrigerated) containers are mandatory. For oversized machinery, Flat Rack or Open Top containers are required. Buyers must verify that the provider can handle OOG (Out of Gauge) cargo if the dimensions exceed standard limits.

Focus on Transit Time Reliability, Vessel Space Guarantee during peak seasons, and Real-time Tracking capabilities. Top-tier providers on Made-in-China.com offer digital dashboards for milestone tracking, ensuring transparency from the Port of Loading (POL) to the Port of Discharge (POD).

Always request a comprehensive quote that breaks down Ocean Freight, Local Charges (THC, DOC), and Destination Charges. Be wary of 'Low Freight' traps where the ocean rate is cheap but destination D/O (Delivery Order) fees are inflated. Using Incoterms like FOB (Free On Board) allows the buyer more control over the shipping process and costs compared to CIF.

Negotiate based on annual volume (TEUs) rather than single shipments to secure VIP rates. Ask for extended free time at the port (Demurrage/Detention)—standard is usually 7 days, but experienced buyers often negotiate for 14 to 21 days to avoid penalties during customs delays.

Never pay the full shipping fee upfront to an unknown agent. Use secure payment channels and verify the Original Bill of Lading (OBL) or Telex Release only after confirming the vessel has departed. For high-value goods, always purchase Marine Cargo Insurance, which typically costs 0.1% - 0.3% of the CI (Commercial Invoice) value.

Ensure all documents—Commercial Invoice, Packing List, and Certificate of Origin—match exactly to avoid customs holds or fines. Stay updated on Anti-Dumping Duties (ADD) and Section 301 tariffs (for US trade) to calculate the Landed Cost accurately before the ship arrives.
