Buyers should focus on GSM (Grams per Square Meter), which determines the bag's strength; typically, 70-120 GSM is standard for retail, while 150+ GSM is used for luxury packaging. The choice between Kraft paper (brown or white) for eco-friendliness and Art paper for high-end printing is crucial. Additionally, ensure the load-bearing capacity matches your product weight to prevent bottom breakage.
To ensure environmental and safety compliance, prioritize suppliers with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification, which guarantees sustainable sourcing. For food-grade bags, FDA or EU 10/2011 compliance is mandatory. If the bags are marketed as compostable, verify EN 13432 or ASTM D6400 standards to avoid 'greenwashing' legal risks in Western markets.
Request information on the printing method—Offset printing is best for high-detail graphics, while Flexo printing is cost-effective for high-volume simple designs. Check for surface treatments like Matte/Glossy Lamination for water resistance, or Spot UV and Foil Stamping for premium branding. Always ask for a pre-production sample to verify color accuracy against Pantone codes.
The choice of handle affects both cost and user experience. Twisted paper handles are the most common for retail due to their balance of strength and low cost. Flat paper handles are the most economical for takeaway food. For luxury brands, Cotton or PP rope handles with reinforced metal eyelets provide a premium feel and higher durability for heavy items.
Paper bags are susceptible to moisture and pressure deformation. Ensure the supplier uses 5-layer corrugated export cartons and waterproof inner polybags. Specify that pallets should be shrink-wrapped and include edge protectors to prevent crushing during container loading and unloading.
Leverage volume-based pricing by requesting quotes for multiple tiers (e.g., 5k, 10k, and 50k units). Discuss long-term cooperation agreements to lock in raw material prices, as paper costs can fluctuate. You can also negotiate lower MOQs for trial designs if you commit to a larger total annual volume.
Utilize the Secured Trading Service on Made-in-China.com to protect your payments. Before transferring large sums, verify the supplier's Audit Report and check if they are a Diamond Member or Audited Supplier. This confirms their physical factory existence and operational history, reducing the risk of fraud.
Many countries have implemented Single-Use Plastic Bans, increasing demand for paper bags. However, some regions impose anti-dumping duties on specific paper products. Always check your local HS Code (typically 4819.40) import tariffs and ensure the supplier provides a Certificate of Origin to benefit from potential Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).
