Diving knife manufacturers

When sourcing diving knives, the choice of metal is critical for balancing corrosion resistance and edge retention. Titanium is the premium choice as it is 100% rust-proof and lightweight, though more expensive. For stainless steel options, 304 or 316 grade steel offers excellent rust resistance but may require more frequent sharpening. 420 or 440 series stainless steel provides a sharper edge but necessitates thorough rinsing with fresh water after every salt-water immersion to prevent pitting.

A versatile diving knife should feature a dual-edge blade: a straight edge for clean cuts and a serrated edge for sawing through tough materials like kelp or thick rope. A built-in line cutter (notch) is essential for emergency entanglement situations. Buyers must also choose between a pointed tip (for piercing) and a blunt tip (safer for prying and preventing accidental punctures to BCDs or drysuits).

While diving knives are tools, they must meet international safety standards for diving equipment. Ensure the manufacturer adheres to ISO 9001 for quality management. Furthermore, the sheath locking mechanism must be tested for mechanical reliability to ensure the knife does not fall out during high-current dives but remains accessible for one-handed release in emergencies.

The handle must be made of non-slip materials like thermoplastic rubber (TPR) or textured composite to ensure a secure grip even with thick neoprene gloves. The sheath should include adjustable depth-compensated straps or MOLLE-compatible mounting systems for attachment to the leg, arm, or BCD. High-visibility accents on the handle are recommended for recovery if dropped in low-visibility water.

Diving knives are often classified as 'controlled goods' or 'edged tools' depending on the destination country. It is vital to verify the legal blade length limits (often under 4 or 5 inches for civilian import) and ensure the product is declared as 'Diving Tool' or 'Outdoor Tool' rather than a weapon. Always check the Customs Tariff Codes (HS Codes), typically 8211.92, to ensure correct duty application.

The primary risk is material fraud, where suppliers claim 'Marine Grade' steel but use inferior alloys that rust within days. To mitigate this, request a Material Test Report (MTR) or a Salt Spray Test (ASTM B117) report. For large orders, utilize Made-in-China.com's inspection services to verify the chemical composition of the steel before the final balance is paid.

When requesting custom branding, focus on laser engraving rather than stamping, as stamping can create stress points where rust begins. Negotiate Minimum Order Quantities (MOQ) by asking for a 'trial batch' of 50-100 units to test market response before committing to thousands. Ensure the contract specifies that defective units (e.g., faulty locking mechanisms) will be replaced at the supplier's expense.

Due to safety regulations, diving knives must be shipped in puncture-proof packaging (double-walled corrugated boxes with internal plastic guards). For air freight, some carriers have strict policies on 'sharps'; Sea Freight is generally more economical and faces fewer restrictions for bulk shipments. Ensure the Commercial Invoice clearly states the intended use for underwater salvage or recreational diving to avoid unnecessary customs delays.
